Negative Adverbials for Emphasis

The Inversion Structure

When a negative adverbial starts a clause, the subject and auxiliary verb swap positions — just like in a question. "I had never seen anything like it." → "Never had I seen anything like it." "I only realized later." → "Only later did I realize." The auxiliary (have, do/does/did, modal) comes before the subject. If there is no auxiliary, use do/does/did.
