The Willowbrook Lantern Festival Returns After Three Years

The small riverside town of Willowbrook welcomed thousands of spectators last weekend for the return of its beloved annual Lantern Festival, which had been suspended for three years due to unforeseen circumstances.

Held along the banks of the River Alder, the festival saw residents and visitors alike set handcrafted paper lanterns adrift at dusk, creating a breathtaking spectacle that drew gasps of wonder from the gathered crowds. The lanterns, each glowing with a warm amber light, drifted slowly downstream, casting long reflections across the water's surface.

Local craftspeople had spent weeks preparing the lanterns, many of which featured intricate floral designs painted in traditional ink. According to festival organizer Clara Hewitt, more than 2,000 lanterns were released in total — a record number for the event.

"There's something deeply moving about watching those lights drift downstream," said Hewitt. "It brings the community together in a way that nothing else quite does."

Visitors came from as far afield as the capital to take part, and local vendors reported a significant boost in trade. The adjacent food market, which runs alongside the festival each year, offered a wide array of local delicacies — from smoked trout to elderflower cordial.
