Future Tenses

Future with Will

Practice using "will" for predictions, spontaneous decisions, and promises.

Form

The future with 'will' is formed with the subject + 'will' + the base form of the verb (will go, will eat, will help). 'Will' stays the same for every subject, so there is no -s on the third person. The negative is 'will not' or the contraction 'won't', and questions are formed by putting 'will' before the subject (Will you come?). In speech and informal writing, 'will' is usually contracted to 'll (I'll, she'll, they'll).

When to Use It

  • Instant decisions made at the moment of speaking (The phone is ringing. I'll get it.)
  • Predictions or opinions about the future, often after think, believe, or hope (I think it will rain tomorrow.)
  • Promises and offers (I'll call you when I land.)
  • Requests and willingness (Will you help me carry this?)
  • Facts or events you are sure will happen (She will turn thirty next month.)

Common Mistakes

  • Adding -s to the verb after will (she will goes -> she will go).
  • Using will for fixed plans already arranged; use 'going to' or present continuous instead (I'm meeting him at six, not I will meet him at six).
  • Forgetting the base form and using a past tense (I will went -> I will go).
  • Writing 'willn't' instead of the correct contraction 'won't'.
