Past Tenses

Past Perfect

Practice using the past perfect for an action completed before another past action.

Form

The past perfect describes an action completed before another action or moment in the past. It is formed with had plus the past participle of the main verb (had finished, had gone, had eaten), and the form is the same for all subjects. For negatives use had not (hadn't), and for questions move had before the subject (Had you eaten?). It is often used with words like before, after, by the time, and already to show which past action came first.

When to Use It

  • An earlier past action before a later past action: "By the time we arrived, the train had already left."
  • Explaining the cause of a past situation: "She was tired because she had worked all night."
  • With "before" or "after" to clarify the order of events: "After he had locked the door, he realized his keys were inside."
  • In reported speech to shift a past tense back: "He said he had seen the movie before."
  • With "already," "just," or "never" to describe experience up to a past point: "I had never tried sushi until that night."

Common Mistakes

  • Using the past perfect when only one past action exists: simple past is enough in "I called him yesterday," not "I had called him yesterday."
  • Forgetting the past participle: say "she had gone," not "she had went."
  • Confusing past perfect with present perfect: use "had finished" for the past, "have finished" for the present.
  • Putting both events in the past perfect: usually one event is past perfect and the other is past simple, as in "The movie had started when we arrived."
